Well a new year is upon us and new brings renewed hope for a brighter tomorrows to all of us veterans. Looking back at 2024, It was a significant year for Post 411. Two long time leaders of our post stepped aside to enjoy their retirement a bit more. Steve and Larry will always be looked on as the heartbeats that got us to where we are today. We also got our Auxiliary formed after several years of trying to get it up and running. A huge thank you to Beverly, Susan, Jeanette, Laura and all who stepped up and delivered a functional Auxiliary Unit on day one.
Why should a young veteran become an American Legion member? There are so many answers, I will try to cover just a few. First, the American Legion gives you a place to commune among other veterans who understand and live with many of the same issues that you do. You will find men, women, Air Force, Navy, Army and Marine Corps veterans. And yes we still razz the other branches just a little.
Second, you continue to serve. The American Legion promotes Americanism, Patriotism and numerous quality programs within the community each year. Your efforts and contributions help to build stronger communities. Each post across the country chooses what programs they participate in. It varies greatly from scouting to youth sporting, adopting families at Christmas, adopting nursing homes and tending to the needs of resident veterans. There is no limit on the good we do within the community.
Third, and possibly one of the most important, we aid veterans in securing the benefits earned through their service. Each post typically has a veterans service officer who is well versed in the nuances of navigating the Veterans Administration (VA). It can be a very daunting task to obtain many of the services owed to veterans. Having a knowledgeable advocate greatly increases your odds of success.
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a member is aiding our fellow sister and brother veterans. It may be just helping an elderly veteran to cut their grass or to get them to a medical appointment. Those little things we do for each other never need to be discussed or bragged about, we just do because it’s the right thing. And one day when you need a hand with something you can be content knowing that help will likely be there for you.
