History and Future of Post 411 Conroe, TX
The Post was chartered in 1934 by thirty four members, all who were WWI veterans. Our oldest living Veteran, today, has been a member for the last 64+ years of this Post and has held almost every Officers position in the Post. Most all of the members were from around the area of Conroe back then. Most of the members were local business men that were either employed by or owned a business. We don’t know a lot about these men except that they were all veterans and wanted to carry on the tradition of the American Legion established in 1919.
After being inactive for many years a small group of approximately ten veterans from another post reactivated the post which at that time had a membership of less than ten members. That reactivation started in 2012 and continues still today. As Veterans who have served in later years, we want to carry on the tradition of Comradeship with other Veterans past and present. Post 411 in Conroe, before Covid, had almost two-hundred seventy members on its rolls and Montgomery County has approximately 35,380 plus veterans. Today, due to a dwindling older veteran population and deaths during Covid, the post has approximately two hundred sixteen members on it roll with less than twenty actively participating.
In 2023 Post 411 continued to be very active in serving its veteran population, the community, and it’s veterans. Amongst other activities, the post continued to serve its adopted nursing home veterans, it worked in conjunction with the Tri County Veteran services to seek out and adopt families in need at Christmas time. It also worked with the local community to serve our local families by participating in the Wreaths Across America program by using our portion of the funds to assist the local veteran community. Throughout the year, the Post aids veterans and surviving family members of veterans with countless issues such as filing of VA claims. Each year we send a delegation of high school senior boys to “Boys State” where they learn invaluable lessons about our country, its government and civic duty.
Today the post meets at the Lone Star Honor Flight home which is located at 13614 Poplar Circle in Conroe, centered approximately between Conroe and Montgomery. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 7pm. Prior to each meeting we have a short, fifteen minute presentation to the members by anyone wanting to supply information that may be beneficial to the attendees. This is not a selling presentation, it is for informational purposes only. While we greatly appreciate the owner of the facility for letting us meet there, but the space is limited and the ability to have fundraisers is very limited.
This brings us to the matter of our home. Since our last Post home was sold some twenty to twenty-five years ago it would be of great benefit to the community for the post to have their own again. In order to better serve our veteran community today and going forward we need outside help to find a permanent Post home to help grow the active membership and participation. It would also allow us to have fundraisers and an Auxiliary to help support the post and support important youth and community activities in Conroe and throughout Montgomery County.
An ideal post home would be one story, approximately 2500 to 4000 square feet with a kitchen area and several meeting rooms. Adequate storage for supplies and equipment. Ample parking would also be needed to meet the demands of a growing post and increased activities.
